Already an accomplished actor, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker, Bertei turns her attention to upending the cliché of the misery memoir. Set in a working class 1960s and ’70s Cleveland neighborhood rife with poverty and violence, Bertei speaks through her avatar Maddie Twist to flip the victim script. TWIST is a testament to her unshakable belief that imagination, poetry, music, and community can transform trauma into survival.
